Mountain weather, cold Atlantic, winelands an hour inland

We cover the places travellers actually sleep in and around Cape Town: the City Bowl, Gardens and Tamboerskloof under Table Mountain, Bo-Kaap, Sea Point and Green Point along the Atlantic, Woodstock and Observatory on the eastern side, Camps Bay and Hout Bay…

We are not the booking engine. Each listing shows a nightly rate and a See price button, and tapping it hands you to app.impt.io, which aggregates more than eight million hotels worldwide and matches or beats the rate…

Gardens and the City Bowl are the walkable choice, with Kloof Street cafes, Long Street bars and the Company’s Garden squirrels ten minutes from your door.

Cape Town has roughly 70km of coastline inside the metro and startlingly few true beachfront hotels — here is where the sand-to-lobby options actually are, in six areas, with the honest catch on each.

Before you book

The questions we get most, answered with this month’s numbers.

01 How cheap can hotels in Cape Town actually get?

In winter, roughly May to August, a clean double in Observatory or Woodstock goes for R450 to R700 a night, and private rooms in guesthouses along Lower Main Road dip under R400. Budget hotels in Sea Point sit at R750 to R950. Observatory and Woodstock are consistently the two cheapest bases that still have a train station and a night bus.

02 When is the best time to visit Cape Town for cheap rooms?

June and July are cheapest: cold fronts roll in off the Atlantic, rain comes in bursts, and City Bowl rates fall to R500 to R800. Peak is 15 December to 5 January, when Camps Bay and Clifton ask R4,000 and up with minimum-stay rules. March, April, October and November are the sweet spot, dry and around R900 to R1,400.

03 Where should I stay in Cape Town on a first trip?

Gardens and the City Bowl suit first-timers who want to walk: Kloof Street restaurants, the Company’s Garden and Bo-Kaap are all on foot. Sea Point suits anyone who wants the promenade, sunsets and cheap Regent Road eating. Muizenberg suits surfers and long-stay budget travellers, forty minutes out on the Southern Line train.

04 Do I need a car in Cape Town?

Not for the city. MyCiTi buses cover the Atlantic seaboard and Table View for roughly R12 to R20 a trip, the airport route to the Civic Centre is about R120, and the Metrorail Southern Line runs to Muizenberg, Kalk Bay and Simon’s Town for under R20. Uber to the CBD from the airport is R250 to R350. Hire a car, around R450 a day, only for Cape Point or the winelands.

05 Why does everyone say to do Table Mountain on your first clear morning?

Because the south-easter shuts it. From November to February that wind lays the tablecloth of cloud over the summit and the Cableway closes, sometimes for three days straight. Tickets are around R420 return, so check the Cableway website at 8am and go the moment it opens. On windy days locals swap Clifton for the warmer, sheltered False Bay beaches.

06 What does every booking removes a tonne of CO2 mean?

Every hotel booking made through this site funds one verified tonne of carbon removal, paid for by IMPT out of the standard booking commission. You pay nothing extra. It is the same room at the same price you would find booking anywhere else, since app.impt.io matches or beats the usual rate, and the tonne is retired on your behalf.
